However, the MMPC or the Sonoran Conservancy may suggest alternative trail names that may be more appropriate as time goes on. The new names may be used to simplify trail layouts or be more in line with the nature of the FH McDowell Mountain Preserve. Any new names must also meet the conventions below. ● Names should be checked to ensure that the proposed names do not conflict with other trail names in use in the area. The names will not be the same or too like any existing name(s) in the area. ● The name(s) should, when possible, have a historical, natural, or geographic connection to the area. ● Trail names should not be overly difficult to pronounce or awkward to spell. ● Train names should avoid using the names of living or recently departed individuals. Two exceptions to this are the Wayne Tall trail and the Andrews/Kinsey trail which should be grandfathered in. ITEM 6. These were listed on the back of the tri-fold. These hard copy maps have been discontinued. The revised Preserve trail map does not speak to trail difficulty. The basis used for these recommendations include: 1. A wide variety of hikers enjoy the Preserve, some with limited to almost no hiking experience, and some very seasoned hikers. 2. Some trails e.g., the Sonoran Trail, cannot be hiked without incorporating other trails. 3. It is important to provide information in a manner that will be useful to the wide range of Preserve users. Eighteen hikes have been identified from Adero Canyon Trailhead (ACT) that are totally or primarily in the Preserve (see Appendix). Data for each hike regarding length and cumulative elevation gain has been collected. (Cumulative elevation gain is defined as the sum of all uphill elevation gains in the hike.) Hiking time varies significantly among hikers. A hiking time metric for each hike has been calculated based on the pace of both a novice and a regular hiker. Input data is: 1. 25 minutes per mile pace for a novice hiker on flat ground. 2. 20 minutes per mile for a regular hiker on flat ground. 3. 5 minutes additional time for each 100 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Additional time for scenic view and rest stops are not incorporated in the hiking time calculation. The hiking time for experienced, faster paced hikers, and those more interested in a cardio workout will be shorter. The eighteen hikes were then ranked by distance, cumulative elevation gain, and estimated hiking times. All hike metrics are for round-trip hikes back to the trailhead starting point. Correlations between hike distance, elevation gain, average slope and estimated hiking time were analyzed. Except for hikes that include the Western Loop, there is a relatively linear relationship between the variables: We believe the most useful metric for inexperienced hikers and casual hikers is the estimated hiking time of the hike, rounded to the nearest 10-minute interval. It is recommended that the identified hikes be listed in order of estimated hiking time, while also including the distance and cumulative elevation gain metrics for the benefit of more experienced hikers that are accustomed to those. Hikes including the Western Loop are exceptions to this correlation of hike difficulty vs. estimated hiking time. The sustained steep incline on the Western Loop, even though a relatively short hike, makes it more challenging for the occasional hiker. The difficulty of these hikes has been adjusted in the rank order listing. Qualitative metrics (easy, moderate, difficult) are subject to wide interpretation and may well be counterproductive. We recommend these descriptors not be used, but instead a color-coded scale based on estimated hike time. The metrics used in arriving at these conclusions are well known and widely used in the hiking community. The specific inputs chosen for the hiking time calculations for the Preserve hikes are significantly more conservative than many published sources to take in to account the less experienced hikers that use the Preserve, especially in the high winter months season. For example, comparing the widely used All Trails information to our recommended estimated hiking times: Hike All Trails Work Group Estimate Western Loop 78 minutes 80 – 90 minutes Ridgeline 106 minutes 130 - 150 minutes A/K 153 minutes 160 - 190 minutes Sonoran + Western 190 minutes 200 - 230 minutes As specified by the MMPC Guidelines, a vetting of these changes is required: Vetting of revised trail rating methodology Step 1 - VETTING: 1. Does it meet the Guiding Principles? This is consistent with the Guiding Principles and enhances a “positive and safe experience” as called for in Section A: Intent and Guiding Principles. 2. Does it complement or conflict with our mission to Preserve the Preserve? There is no impact. 3. Does it take the source into consideration - Town, Community, SCFH, within MMPC? (Town source should take priority) Valuable input was received from the SCFH and incorporated in the final recommendation. The SCFH supports this change. 4. What problem does it solve or what need does it satisfy? Ratings in the Preserve are currently specified by trail. However, many hikes in the Preserve require hiking on more than one named trail. The revised rating system focuses on what is most useful for hikers, i.e. hike rating, not trail rating. 5. What are the funding requirements? (both capital and expense as well as necessary or long-term funding sources) There is no appreciable cost associated with this recommendation. 6. What is the level of effort to pursue? (Is it achievable within the means of the MMPC?) Implementation consists of only changing the rating description on newly published materials. Step 2 – APPROVAL (presented by Working Group at a monthly MMPC meeting) 1. Outline the problem or need. 2. Provide several possible scenarios with pros and cons for each. 3. If appropriate, provide a recommendation for approval/disapproval. These are addressed in the body of the document. Step 3 – PRIORITIZATION (once approved) 1. Are there time constraints in implementing the idea? (budget deadlines, seasonal considerations, resource availability, etc.) None. 2. Will funding complexities affect completion? No. Recommendations: 1. Difficulty metrics should be for Hikes, not for Trails. a. Do not speak to trail difficulty, speak to hike difficulty. b. All references are for round trip hikes (not one-way) 2. Estimated hike time is the most useful metric for the typical Preserve hiker. a. Distance and cumulative elevation gain data should also be provided for more experienced hikers. b. Qualitative descriptors should not be used, but rather a color-coded difficulty gradation.
