Staff Summary (Background)
Blue Zones Project is a well-being initiative that is brought to each community through the support of
forward-thinking community sponsors. The value is improved well-being through healthier choices
offered where people live, work, and play such as worksites, schools, grocery stores and restaurants.
Because sponsors fund the project, there is no cost to individual citizens, organizations or the city.
Projects are generally three to five years and are funded by multiple sponsors contributing to yearly
investments in their community’s health.
Blue Zones Project has a unique relationship with each community, and funding models vary from
state to state and community to community. From public funders, like Fountain Hills Health District, to
public-private partnerships, Blue Zones Project sponsors are making an investment in community and
individual well-being.
Netflix, has a documentary series available to watch, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones. The series
is based on Dan Buettner visiting Singapore, then how he shares his discoveries in the United States to
find out if it's possible to create new Blue Zones in a rapidly changing world.

VARELA: I'm going to Call to Order the Community Services Advisory Commission
Meeting of June 25, 2024, and then can I get a Roll Call, please?
LOPUSZANSKI: Can I get a meeting start time for the Call to Order for the record,
please?
VARELA: 5:02 p.m.
LOPUSZANSKI: Thank you. Chair Varela?
VARELA: Here.
LOPUSZANSKI: Vice Chair Reddick?
REDDICK: Here.
LOPUSZANSKI: Commissioner Barnes?
BARNES: Here.
LOPUSZANSKI: Commissioner Ruppert?
RUPPERT: Here.
LOPUSZANSKI: Commissioner Rudolphy?
RUDOLPHY: Here,
LOPUSZANSKI: Commissioner Wilson?
WILSON: Here,
LOPUSZANSKI: Youth Commissioner Williams?
WILLIAMS: Here.
LOPUSZANSKI: Thank you.
VARELA: Thank you. Okay, we have a change to our agenda order today. We’re going
to have Youth Commissioner Kevin Williams, speak to us.
LOPUSZANSKI: You press the spacebar, and the video will play. Once it is done you
can speak.
WILLIAMS: First, we have a video that the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) put
together as a yearly recap for our group.
(MYC VIDEO) The Mayor's Youth Council had a great year serving the community and
participating in various activities to learn more about the government in Fountain Hills.
Here's what we accomplished this year. To start the year off, MYC sent members to the
League of Arizona Cities and Towns Conference down in Tucson. The day was filled
with networking and sessions to learn more about local government. The group even got
to carry the Town of Fountain Hills flag in the opening ceremony.

Next, we went on a team-building trip to the Game Show Battle Room, which helped us
to get to know each other better and engage in some friendly competition. We had a blast
strategizing and competing in various games, like Family Feud, and the Price is Right.
The MYC then began to work on one of their main activities, which was conducting a
mock council meeting. To start, we had a Town Clerk Linda Mendenhall teach the group
how a council meeting is run. Next members were assigned roles like Councilmember,
Town Clerk, or resident and were given prompts to research and develop opinions. We
then conducted the mock Council inside the council chambers. This experience allowed
the youth council to see how council meetings are run into experience what it's like to
form an opinion on a subject while receiving input from staff members and members of
the public.
One of MYCs favorite things to do is to complete volunteer service hours. This year,
NYC members have completed a total of 335 service hours total. Service activities have
included volunteering at events like Spooky Blast, Irish Fest, Eggstravaganza, Back to
School Bash, adopt a Street on Westby Drive, and participating in Make a Difference
Day.
In January the Mayor’s Youth Council hosted the Teen Takeover. This event featured a
silent dance party, video game room, laser tag, photo booth, and more. We thank the
Fountain Hills Coalition for sponsoring the event and allowing awesome raffle prizes to
be given out. Over 80 teens attended, and it was rocking time. This year MYC received
several presentations from sub-departments, including the fire and economic
development departments. These presentations helped us better understand how various
departments work in the town and gave us insight into all the work the town staff do for
the town residents.
Lastly, we want to thank our eight graduating members, Kevin, Shruti, Ben, Yasmin,
Autumn, Olivia, Brooke, and Chris, for their contributions to the Mayor's Youth Council.
We wish you the best in all you do.

Thank you to Mayor Dickey and the Town Council for your support this year. We're
looking forward to next year with plans to create ways to get more youth involved in
local government and to engage in even more service opportunities. Youth residing in
Fountain Hills who will be in grades 9 through 12 for the 2024 to 2025 school year are
encouraged to apply and get involved in all these great opportunities. (END OF MYC
VIDEO).
WILLIAMS: So that was the official summary video. But I would also like to give you
guys my personal summary. Just because I like talking. So, I had the privilege to serve as
President of MYC this year, and to be quite honest, I didn't start getting into the council
and caring a lot more about the events until this year. I obviously still cared about it the
past three years, but especially this year I realized just how much it meant to me. So, a
couple of key points to take away from that video. We had eight graduating members we
had over 330 Total service hours this year. Our biggest event or biggest project was the
Teen Takeover, we had over 80 attendees. It was a great event that's been my favorite
event to run for the past three years at the Community Center.
Something that wasn't mentioned in the video that I think should be, was that we had four
new members this year. One of them was from ASU Prep, two of whom were from Basis,
and then we had one new member from Fountain Hills High School. I think something
important to take away from that is, that we're not just having people from Fountain Hills
High School. I remember the first year, I was on the Mayor's Youth Council, it was me,
my brother, and my sister and we're the only ones from BASIS, and we're all in one
family. So, I think it's great that the council has more diverse ideas that are being brought
in from different backgrounds, and different schools and things like that. My personal
favorite part of this year is that we touched on a little bit in the video with the team-
building event. But especially this year, I feel like the group got closer. There are people
that for the past three years, I've been in Mayor's Youth Council with, and I haven't really
talked to them that much, but this year, I became close with them. And I feel like that's
obviously not the main objective of the council, but it is a good outcome from it. And
overall, it's just been an incredible experience. I would love to see it continue and I'm
excited to go back in the years to come and see how it does. Thank you.

VARELA: Thank you. That was great. This is Kevin's last meeting. So, we appreciate
everything you've done. And I thought you were just phenomenal on here with us and
sharing your ideas and everything. I appreciate it and I hope that you pass that on to some
of the younger ones coming up, you know, because we're ready for him. So, thank you.
WILSON: Kevin, I just want to say a great job to you in your group MYC. That's a
fantastic number of hours served. I also did MYC, however, it has greatly improved since
my time in high school. So, it's cool to see how staff have really improved this program
for you guys, that you guys have that chance to network and get to know officials before
you graduate high school. So well done.
RUDOLPHY: Well, done on putting the video together. I think that's a great addition to
the community and yourself. Kudos, and best of luck in the future.
SNIPES: Yeah, I agree. I think one of the cool aspects is that showing that to the Town
Council I think went a long way to getting them to get a feel for just how many things
that you're involved in, versus someone sitting up there and reading it. You know, seeing
the photos along with the story. It’s a picture that tells a 1000-word type of deal. But I
think that was a great idea that you guys did to add that to the list of things that you guys
did such a great job.
WILLIAMS: Yeah, just a small note, but we did put it to a vote whether we wanted to
do just like the normal presentation, or whether we wanted to create that video. And I am
happy that we chose to create the video because not only is it just a really good way of
showing what we did, but also you know, even just I was looking through the past year so
that I can see so I can make some notes on what to tell you guys because I didn't think
we'd have the video here. So, I was looking through it just this morning again. And it was
just great to look back on the year and it was fun to see everything that we did.
VARELA: Well, thank you. All right, do we have a Call to the Public?
LOPUSZANSKI: No Call to the Public.
VARELA: Thank you. The next item on the agenda is Reports by Commissioners. Did
anyone do anything around town in the last month?
REDDICK: It wasn't around town, but I had the privilege of going to Washington, D.C.
to support Veterans as a part of the Bunkers Lab Group which is something that I'm
supporting as part of being the ambassador for the state. So that was very interesting. We
were able to come up with some great initiatives supporting that needing not only work

but support with HR, finances, loans, and just the whole nine yards of starting a business.
So, it was pretty, impactful.
VARELA: Great. I have been noticing the sidewalks that are going in around my
neighborhood on Saguaro. I'm very happy about this project since I've been talking about
it for probably the past year. I'm appreciative that we're getting them. The next item on
the agenda is the Introduction of Brandon Putnam, Parks Superintendent.
PUTMAN: My name is Brandon Putman. I’m originally from Colorado.
SNIPES: Hey, Brandon, can you make sure that the mic is on because she takes all the
minutes directly off that? So, tap on it and see if it's working. Okay, then can you scoot it
closer so that it'll pick up better? Thanks. You got it. It makes it bad for Patti.
PUTMAN: I went to Colorado State for Turfgrass Management, landscape and
horticulture. From there, I went to Pennsylvania and played minor-league baseball for a
while. That took me around to quite a few countries, doing just baseball fields in Italy,
and Puerto Rico, and three times to Taiwan. After four years there, I came to the Peoria
Sports Complex, which is spring training for the Padres and the Mariners. From there I
branched out to right-of-way landscape maintenance, became an arborist, and certified
sports field manager, and oversaw multi-use pathways and open-space trail networks. So
spent 13 years with the city of Peoria and started here on April 1st. I’ve been jumping in
with all the guys learning about the parks, and all the little nuances that go along with
those. Right now, we are crunching the budget and making sure that we close out the
fiscal and try to capitalize on all the funding that we were authorized. So, I'll take any
questions.
RUDOLPHY: Hi, Brandon, don't have any questions, but just want to welcome you
aboard and comment that you've got a tough act to follow from Mr. Snipes. Sounds like
you'll be able to do it in a remarkable fashion. Good luck.
PUTMAN: Thank you. One of the things that attracted me to Fountain Hills was both
Kevin’s and Rachael's culture they've built and leadership style. So, I'm very excited to
be here in Fountain Hills and learn a different way of managing and leading in this type
of industry.
RUPPERT: First of all, welcome Brandon. You and I've met before and we wish you all
the luck in the world, sir. You've been here since April, if you had one wish, for Fountain
Hills, Parks and Rec, what would that be at this point? And I know it's putting you on the
COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION
JUNE 25, 2024, VERBATIM MEETING MINUTES
Transcribed by https://otter.ai - 7 -
spot. But you know, sometimes it takes an outsider, or a new guy to come and see, you
know, the inner workings and what improvements we might want to make?
PUTMAN: That's a great question. So definitely here in Arizona, water is critical. We
know that for our way of life. And it's absolutely critical to the success and the
beautification of our parks. So, one of the things that I have my eye on is continuing
Kevin's legacy of continuing to get irrigation systems functioning. Well, he got them
functioning. So now we're working on those minor tweaks of potentially doing some
readjustment of head spacing on the turf grass. Crews have been focused on our drip
irrigation making sure that we're not losing any shrubs or trees. And then obviously, the
heart of every park is its water source. So, we've been looking at different chemistries for
Fountain Park to improve turfgrass quality and getting set up on a preventative
maintenance plan for our pump stations so that the heart of the park continues to beat. So,
we've had a few minor issues with some of our pump stations that feed the irrigation
system. And so, getting those on a preventative maintenance program will help some of
the long lead times that we've experienced in getting repairs done. Thank you.
REDDICK: And Brandon, I wanted to say welcome to parks and recreations here in
Fountain Hills. Honestly, Kevin and Rachael have done an amazing job with the team
members that have been in place. As someone who is at the park frequently every
morning, you have a great group. And I hope that you continue to keep that group in
place because they do a great job. So welcome again.
PUTMAN: Thank you. It's been amazing to watch the crew interact with the public.
Especially Fountain Joe, who knows dogs' names more than sometimes the people's
names. And so, you know, it's that, again, that's one of the things that attracted me to
Fountain Hills was the community engagement and listening to what the community
desires. And so that was another thing that attracted me here. So, you know, small little
tweaks to inefficiencies, but yeah, not going to upset the culture.
VARELA: I'd like to say welcome also and utilize us for what you need us to do if you
need us to get the word out for things, we're here for you.
PUTMAN: Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you on a personal basis,
and spending some time on how we can just enhance the community and enhance our
parks. I called the parks here in Fountain Hills, part of the DNA of the town . I'm excited
to work with you all on the next great thing, which is Parks and Recreation.

SNIPES: Yeah, and I just like to add a little bit to that, with Brandon has been here since
April, watching him grab a hold of a lot of things that, that I didn't have time or wasn't
able to and see those weaknesses and grab them right off the bat and jumping in on those.
And then trying to figure out the culture and the group. And, figuring out how to blend all
of that has been fun to watch for me and help take a huge load off myself. And so, I
greatly appreciate that and looking forward to what we do together. So, I know we found
a good one. And I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. Thank you for what you do.
PUTMAN: Thank you, sir.
VARELA: All right. Well, thank you. Can I get a Motion to Approve the CSAC May
20, 2024 Verbatim Meeting Minutes?
WILSON: Move to approve.
REDDICK: I second that motion to approve.
VARELA: All in favor?
ALL: Aye.
VARELA: Okay and now can we get an Update on the Arizona State Puzzle Pieces?
SNIPES: Certainly. So, we just completed putting on our first round of puzzle pieces
today. Brandon got those put on, we put on our first round of donor puzzle pieces. We
could go I guess now, and we didn't have enough hardware to put everything on. So now
we have at least our first round and the partial pieces on. We have a few more pieces that
have not been purchased. I think it looks cool. You can kind of get a vibe of it. now
because there are puzzle pieces that are on there. The donors get to choose their spot of
what spots are left. Depending on if it's a horizontal or vertical piece once you find out
how your verbiage fits best, because it's two totally different formats. Then Patty sends
out a map that says this is what's left and then they choose them and then we'll go out and
install them. So, there's a little bit more control by the donor. The earlier you get your
piece and as Craig knows, when you get the first piece then you get to put it exactly
where you want it. So, thank you for that appreciate it. But yeah, so I'm excited to see the
pickup of pace with that. I think once they start seeing the pieces tomorrow at 6 am the
frame goes up for the shade structure. So, we're good I had about seen that go in as well.
They did the pour of the footings about a week and a half or two weeks ago. So, we're
really looking forward to seeing the structure. It'll take them because it's a custom piece,
they want to put it up. And then they'll do the measurements to make sure the fabric

pieces are correct. And then a couple of weeks from tomorrow, they will be back to put
the fabric up. I think it's going to be awesome. I can't wait to get it.
RUDOLPHY: Is it still going to be functional while they're building the Discovery
Center?
SNIPES: The Discovery Center fence went up today. We had some negotiating that
went on around where and how the fence would go in, but they were allowed to come just
barely into the pavers with their fencing. And they are planning on starting as soon as
possible. So, they may have their office set up over there in the parking lot. The fencing
is all up today. So, there's going to be a lot of activity over there for sure.
VARELA: All right, thank you. Can we get an Update on the Budget?
SNIPES: Certainly. Where we're at I thought I would go over a couple of different sides
of this. So, this year's budget, our Capital Improvement Projects that are either completed
or getting close to completion within the next couple of days is the Centennial Pavilion
project which we have the wind turbine benches that are going in around there we have
five that are capturing the 5 C’s of Arizona that were hand-painted artwork on the inside
of a shaded bench. Then we have 6 smaller benches that are also going around there for a
total of 11 benches. Desert Vista improvements we completed the Fitness Park, and we
also have several other wind turbine benches over there that have a different style.
They're a little bit bigger to accommodate more people in that space. And then we just
recently completed getting the landscaping done over there as well. Which just makes
such a big difference over there now compared to when there was so much dirt in so
many places. It looks good. Thanks, Kevin, for coming we appreciate it. (Youth
Commissioner Kevin Williams had to leave the meeting early at 5:24 pm).
At Golden Eagle Park this year we did a millon overlay of all the parking lots, so they
don't have new asphalt. The LED field lighting is completed. It was the second half of a
two-year project, which was a June to July run and the Fountain Park Splashpad shade
canopy has been installed. We put 20 picnic tables around the area. The new sidewalks
all around the area and landscaping will be done probably in the next day or two. I would
say they started on it today and finished up the granite. And so that's the only thing they
have left to do for that. So, we have all the trees and stuff planted. If you haven't seen the
area, please go down and look. It’s awesome and the parents are ignoring the caution
signs that say stay out for now. So, the picnic tables are already being used. But the goal
COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION
JUNE 25, 2024, VERBATIM MEETING MINUTES
Transcribed by https://otter.ai - 10 -
was to get it ready for July 4. And we have one more sidewalk that needs to be poured.
It's the last one that comes in from the parking lot to the shade structure. And that will
also be done before July 4. So, we're excited to get this up and running and let everybody
see and enjoy it. I think it is cool. I am very biased. I admit that. So absolutely go check it
out.
RUDOLPHY: If I could interrupt so you're saying the sidewalks have been replaced ?
And trees taken out?
SNIPES: So, the sidewalk that I believe you're referring to Craig is the sidewalk at Plaza
Fountainside that is not ours. They just reached out today. We came to an agreement with
them. We're taking out the Sissoo trees. Brandon, do you have confirmation of the date?
They're starting on that. It is this week, and they're next week. Okay. So, sissoo trees are
coming out and we're taking care of that side of it. They are doing their sidewalk up to
our line. It's been a long, slow process but everybody's finally signed on the dotted line,
and they should have that done sometime this summer as well. I haven't got a start date
from them yet, but I know that they were just inquiring today on the timing of when
they're what time in the morning, they're allowed to start and do demo work. So, I'm
anticipating starting very soon, I hope because that's been a nightmare since I've been
here.
RUDOLPHY: So, are you done telling us about 24?
SNIPES: Yes.
RUDOLPHY: What if anything, didn't get done in 24 that you wanted to get done?
SNIPES: Good question. So, with all the projects that we had going on, I didn't feel like
I could tackle the hillside erosion on Panorama at Fountain Park. There's a hillside that
got cut away when they put the sidewalk along Panorama. And I know from plans that I
saw there was originally planned to be a seat wall put down along through there and that
didn't get done. I'm not sure why. We were intending on either rerouting or reconfiguring
that hillside and that part didn't get done. That's probably the biggest project that we
missed out on completing this year. For next year, we have $235,000, and $200,000 for
the following year going to the Avenue of the Fountains improvements. That one's kind
of next in line in our parks, we did Four Peaks, then we did Desert Vista, and now we're
going to do the Avenue of the Fountains. And we're hoping to follow that up by going to
Golden Eagle and doing some work there again. We have $180,000 designated to do
COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION

three more pickleball courts at Four Peaks Park. Golden Eagle Park is getting the second
half of the playground replaced. When we did the original, we had limited funds, so we
put the dome in over there in the 5-year-old to 12-year-old playground. But we didn't do
anything under the shade canopy for the 5-year-old to 12-year-olds and that equipment
was put in in 1998, I believe. So, it's far past its expected life and it has some things on it
that need to go so we're ready to move on into that section. So that'll be going on. We
have two new parks that we'll be building one is Panorama Park, which is the area down
where the wash used to be that was filled in by Public Works. We ended up taking that
over not too long ago close to the end of the budget season. So, we're working on a
design plan for that to have it be it'll be a passive park. It'll be a pathway, some benches
maybe, and a bunch of new trees to provide some shade down through there. And then
the other park is Pleasantville Park which we've been talking about for a while that's
going up on Bainbridge and Golden Eagle. That will also be our designated star
observing park for the evenings. Then we have a few different supplementals that also
went through this year one is replacing the fencing on Fields 3 and 4 the homerun
fencing, we have $40,000 to put towards that we did field one this year and so I did that
under our budget. I decided to ask for a supplement to cover the other two this year and
then the following year, we'll probably look into doing Field 2 as well, and then all the
fences will have been updated and replaced, which was badly needed. There was a lot of
rot we got a lot of things temporarily repaired when we did the 2018 flood, but those
fences weren't something that got done we did basically the posts that we had to at that
time and since then there's substantially more degradation of the structures out there, so
we're going to go ahead and get those fixed. For the Splashpad, we put in a supplement to
cover resealing the surface is on there as part of the warranty if you don't continue to
maintain it, they don't follow the warranty. So that becomes critical in that is a $15,000
re-sealant that must be done every couple of years. With that, I'll take any questions that
you have.
WILSON: I don't have any questions, but I just want to say good job on everything that
you're doing. And good luck with everything else.
SNIPES: Thank you appreciate it.
VARELA: I say the same thing. And I'm very excited for the Centennial Circle.
SNIPES: That's been another one I can't wait till that one's done. It's been a challenge.

VARELA: Yeah. I have been waiting for that one Okay, Update Grant Workgroup.
REDDICK: So, I think don't you think we're the next one? Well, it's great, and veterans.
So, it's combined, in a way. Just go off the first part of the grant workshop. Stephen and
Natalie and I will be meeting the second week of July, to have a great meeting with CLK,
who is an amazing grant supporter writer that I was able to get us connected wi th. Her
background is specifically not only in writing grants but finding grants for local
communities. Because she's connected through a great organization, that's nonprofit, she
has volunteered her time to meet with us during that Zoom time. So, we can take some
best practices and some tools, and then bring them back to you, Patti , and the team. From
there, if you all approve, we can then move forward with those grants that we find with
her structure and her best practices. And, with her guiding us to get the grant written, she
has a 76% rate of getting grants done. So, it's pretty solid. Regarding the transition for the
Veterans Project Workgroup, we have a group called VBA. It's a Veterans Business
Association, their partner with the SBS and, they've been also willing to support us not
only with grants but also supporting us with providing grants, not only related to veterans
but projects as well, to support local communities here. So, during that call, as well, we
can kind of outline how here in Fountain Hills, we can best benefit and support our
veterans locally, not only from a business perspective but from a health mental health
perspective and just from a local support perspective. So those are the points that I have.
SNIPES: One thing that you brought up about the veterans we've had, this week, we're
having our second veterans support group meetings over in the Community Center that
we've been hosting. We've had 9 or 10 people each time, and we had a veteran come in
and do a talk. One of the requests that was made during the talk was can we get a support
group going so we started with it right away. It's had a good turnout so far, especially
considering its summertime. And so usually groups struggle a little bit more in the
summer. To kick off with 9 or 10 people is fantastic. And she says there is a need.
REDDICK: Yeah. Can you share those dates, Kevin?
SNIPES: I'll get that information and I will tell you when they're scheduled.
I don't remember what day of the month they're on. But I'll get that to you.
REDDICK: Thank you.
SNIPES: Certainly. Yeah, that sounds great. Kevin, I appreciate you taking the lead on
this and I'm ready to get started with it. It's good. Thank you. And just to add to that,
Steven, you'll get a link for a Zoom meeting with CLK and Natalie.

VARELA: All right, let's see. We've already done the Update on the Mayor's Youth
Council, so Update and Future Agenda Items, and Presentations.
RUDOLPHY: I have a comment. I don't know if it's relevant or pertinent at this time
but, I've been serving as the acting Finance Director for the Fountain Hills School District
and willing to see if our commission can somehow interact with the school district. I see
the superintendent, and some of the principals so here are things that we might
collaborate on, or bounce ideas off. I don't know if they could do any presentations, or if
we could do anything with them. But it might be good to develop a closer working
relationship with the school district so that we can address the needs of the students that
are in our schools.
VARELA: Great suggestion. Yes. I think it's feasible. Do you think it is doable on our
end?
SNIPES: Yeah, I think so. Absolutely.
REDDICK: And I mean, just to add a little further, from each standpoint, I think we all
add a lot of value individually. And I would be willing to bring perspective from a
brokerage financing perspective to the students. So, if we do meet with the principals, it'd
be great if we could say how we could support the youth, as you mentioned if we're given
the opportunity to do these types of presentations and work groups, I would love to be a
part of it.
WILSON: Well, I was just going to say, I think that's a great idea, especially since I
think some of the teens use some of our parks, right? So, if there's some sort of like
partnership, or whatever, you know, now you got us brainstorming, Craig.
VARELA: Okay, so now we're back to the next agenda item, Future Agenda Items.
WILSON: I wasn't sure if anyone had time to review the Blue Zones websites. Again,
I'm not an expert but if that's something that you guys think you'd be interested in, like, a
presentation, I think it would be good to have or, Kevin, if you have any perspective on
it.
SNIPES: No, I think that'd be a good thing to have her come in and give a talk. Sure.
WILSON: So, do you want me to just reconnect with you guys?
SNIPES: And yeah, that'd be fine. If you want to see if she's available to do it. Is Vicki
the one that does that?
WILSON: It's Julie Ewald.

SNIPES: Oh Julie Ewald. Yeah, if you want to see if she's available to do it for our next
meeting then get with Patti to where we can get it on for the September meeting.
VARELA: Okay, anyone else? All right, let's see Upcoming Events and Volunteer
Opportunities.
SNIPES: We got a lot of things going on in our non-busy season. I don't know how this
happened, for sure. But we all said we couldn't wait till summer when we get a little bit
of a break and then this happened. So, we have Summer Games going on. We have four
different meanings for that we've had our first one and we have our next second one
tomorrow. We have had a pretty good turnout for it. We changed the times and tried to
get more interaction. Our Rec Manager has been challenging all the kids to Mario Kart
and is confident that he can beat all of them until he meets his match and got whooped
multiple times last time. So, which is good for him? You know, we need to keep him in
check. But it's been a good turnout. Our Wacky Wednesday was the largest we've ever
had. For the last one we had over 100 kids there and they didn't just pop in and go, they
were there for the full time that we ran it. So that was impressive. Our Party in the Park
and that one's done. July 9, our Ice Cream Social, which is always a hit with everyone,
including myself because there's ice cream. Don't miss that. If you want to come over and
have some ice cream, you're more than welcome. Family Fun Night is in the Community
Center. Again, getting people out of the heat, but keeping our families interactive with
our recreation group so we don't lose momentum and we keep providing a place for
people to go. Our final is our Back to School Bash on August 9th, which has been a huge
success over the last several years. It's over at Four Peaks and has proven to continue to
grow each year. So, if you're interested in volunteering for any of those, we'd love to have
you join us. The 4th of July is coming up here shortly and if anyone is interested in
volunteering, we'd be happy to have you. I know, Craig, you're volunteering. Craig's a
glutton for punishment to come out and play in the heat. Does anyone else want to come
out and sweat to the oldies?
RUDOLPHY: What time do you need the volunteers there, Kevin?
SNIPES: I think we have two shifts set up. And I think the first shift is seven and the
second one. Are we four to four to seven and seven to nine? Is that right? Yeah. 7 am
tonight. Nice try PM. You can come in the AM. But that would be the next morning for
cleanup. We also have volunteer needs for the 5th of July as well at 6 am. We're having
COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION

volunteers come to the restroom by the playground and help us pick up trash to make it
look back the way it does. It's fascinating to me how good the public is about coming out
and helping us with that. Because no one wants to come out the day after July 4. And we
always get a good group that comes out. We've made it a lot easier by having some
mechanical equipment that helps pick up the shells from the fireworks, which is a lot of
debris. It's one where we get good support and as we always do this, this town's amazing
as far as the volunteers coming out and being willing to help us out even when it is hot
and nasty but if you want to have a good time and have good events, we need that kind of
support, because our staff isn't nearly big enough to pull it off without you. So, if
anybody's willing to come out and help we'd be happy to have you.
VARELA: For the Summer Games, what are the ages and is it a drop-off? event?
SNIPES: It is a drop-off event. I don't know what our ages are for that one. All ages. It
says so. So yeah, all ages are welcome. And it's just all kinds of different gaming
activities and hanging out and socializing and getting people together. Then there are
snacks because who doesn't like snacks? So, we always have snacks, beverages and video
games, board games. Anything that for the kids to do you know when it's a good event.
VARELA: Okay. All right, so our Next Meeting is September 23rd, 2024. Can I get a
Motion to Adjourn?
WILSON: Move to Adjourn.
RUPPERT: I'll second.
VARELA: All right. All in favor.
ALL: Aye.
VARELA: Great, the meeting adjourned at 5:45 pm.
