Proclamation
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
WHEREAS,the Town of Fountain Hills,Arizona is committed toensuringthesafetyand security ofallthose living
in and visiting the Town;and
WHEREAS,fireisa serious public safety concern bothlocallyandnationally,and homes are thelocations where
people are at greatest riskfromfire;and
WHEREAS,homefires killed morethan2,300peopleintheUnited States in 2012,accordingtotheNationalFire
Protection Association (NFPA),and fire departments in the United States responded to 365,000 home fires;and
WHEREAS,working smoke alarms cut the riskofdyingin reported home firesinhalf;and
WHEREAS,threeoutoffivehomefire deaths resultfromfiresinpropertieswithout working smoke alarms;and
WHEREAS,inone-fifthofall homes with smoke alarms,none were working;and
WHEREAS,when smoke alarms should have operated butdidnotdo so it was usually because batteries were
missing,disconnected,or dead;and
WHEREAS,the residents ofFountain Hills shouldinstall smoke alarms inevery sleeping room,outside each
separate sleeping area,and on every levelof the home;and
WHEREAS,the residents of Fountain Hills should install smoke alarms and alert devices that meet the needs of
people who are deaf or hard of hearing;and
WHEREAS,the residents ofFountain Hills who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more
prepared and will therefore be more likelyto survive afire;and
WHEREAS,Fountain Hills'first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire
injuries through prevention and protection education;and
WHEREAS,Town residents are responsive topublic education measures and are able to take personal steps to
increase their safety fromfire,especially in their homes;and
WHEREAS,the2014Fire Prevention Week theme,"Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives:Test YoursEvery
Month!"effectively serves toremindusthatwe need working smoke alarms togiveusthetimeto get outsafely.
NOW,THEREFORE,I ,MayorLindaM.Kavanagh,do hereby proclaim October 5-11,2014,as Fire Prevention
Week throughout the Town of Fountain Hills,and I urge all Town residents to test their smoke alarms at least
every month by pushing the test button,and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Fountain
Hills'fire and emergency services during Fire Prevention Week 2014.
