HomeMy WebLinkAbout5-17-07 packet including EMCFD & CMDStreet Department The Street Department has 10 dedicated employees who are responsible for the maintenance and repair of over 170 miles of roads. The Street Department is responsible for: Asphalt Repair Asphalt Maintenance Right-of Way Maintenance Special Projects Traffic Studies Traffic Calming Traffic Control for Special Events Traffic Signal Maintenance Crosswalks, Stop Bars and Turn Arrows Road Closure Emergencies Street Sweeping Storm Drain Clean-Out Sign Fabrication Sign Installation Custom Sign Installation Fleet Maintenance Asphalt Repair Repairing streets on an as-needed basis. Although drought conditions have slowed the deterioration of the asphalt and base material, we continue to have failures, especially in our older sections of Town. Asphalt Maintenance The Street Department prepares approximately 30 miles of streets each year for slurry or Micro Surfacing. Right-of-Way Maintenance Grading and brush control in rights-of-way Maintaining the shoulders and line-of-sight is an on-going project. Special Projects The Street Department assists other departments and performs special projects such as small concrete jobs, erosion control at wash crossings, curb repair and the banners along Shea and Avenue of the Fountains. Traffic Studies Traffic studies indicate speed and vehicle counts, which are used to justify installation of traffic control devices. Traffic studies are also useful to other departments such as Economic Development. Traffic Calming The Town receives many calls from residents expressing concerns with speeding, cut through traffic or excessive traffic on their streets. The speed trailer, along with traffic studies, lend valuable information and data to assist in addressing these issues. Traffic Control for Special Events The Street Department provides traffic control and road closures for events throughout the year. Staff works closely with MCSO with each event to provide a safe event with minimal disruption to residents. Traffic Signal Maintenance The Street Department staff performs all exterior maintenance to the 12 traffic signals. Crosswalks, Stop Bars and Turn Arrows Staff maintains and installs all cross-walks, stop bars and turn arrows in Town. They are all heat applied thermo-plastic that are designed to retain a longer life and higher reflectivity. Road Closures Staff provides emergency road closures for a variety of reasons that include utility failures, traffic accidents, storm related events or law or fire emergencies. Emergencies (Storms, Power Outages, Accidents) The department provides 24 hour, 7 day emergency call out service. Staff responds to all calls from MCSO, day or night. After hours calls include storm damage, traffic accidents, flooding, traffic signal issues and incidents that require traffic control. The department averages 4 call outs per month that require personnel and/or equipment. Street Sweeping The department has two street sweepers on the roads most days, collecting an average of two tons of material each day. Storm Drain Clean-Out The PM-10 sweeper has the ability to clean storm drains. These drains are cleaned on an as-needed basis. Sign Fabrication Staff fabricates custom signs in our small shop. However, the majority of signs are made at an off-site sign shop. Sign Installation The Street Department installs and maintains nearly 5,000 signs and poles. A sign maintenance and inventory program allows staff to monitor each sign and pole the department is responsible for. ●In addition to street signs, staff also installs and maintains signs and poles for programs such as Adopt-a-Street and the neighborhood watch programs. Custom Sign Installation Fleet Maintenance The Street Department is also responsible for the Town’s fleet – purchasing, maintenance and disposal of nearly 70 vehicles and pieces of equipment used by the Town’s various departments.
