AGENDA ITEM#5: REPORT FROM THE MCDOWELL MOUNTAIN MONTH WORKGROUP Chair Myers thanked Commissioner Bisceglia for a great job and for all his efforts for the October 29th event. He also thanked the group for their work. • Approximately 150 attended the event • There were approximately nine displays • The horseback riding was a huge hit • The Regional Park higher-ups nixed the helicopter rides because of liability issues The group will meet prior to the next Commission meeting to review and list suggestions for next year's event. They will report at the Commission meeting. This was the third event with each year more successful than the previous. C 1 McDowell Mountain Preservation Commission More suggestions: • The children's hike with the Mayor should not be scheduled for the weekends before and after the school's fall-break • Get Park Ranger Amy Ford and the stewards more involved with promoting our events • Perhaps have a Youth Commissioner as part of the Commission AGENDA ITEM #6: REPORT FROM THE FOUNTAIN HILLS AND SCOTTSDALE TRAIL CONNECTION WORKGROUP The City of Scottsdale is busy with preserve land purchases and will possibly contact the State for the State Land Usage Permit(SLUP)by the end of the year. The Conservancy is working on the trail on the Fountain Hills side. AGENDA ITEM# 7: REPORT FROM THE PRESERVE MARKETING WORKGROUP Commissioner Barberic said he now has more time to work on the Preserve Marketing. • More out of town people were inquiring about the Preserve • The fair booth was set up very nicely with beautiful pictures • Only one person asked where the Preserve is; the directional signs are helping • Suggested that the booth be placed closer to where the action is to get more traffic: the Chamber would have to be contacted The Commission's budget request letter was sent to Council. The 21st American Trails International Trails Symposium will be held at the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation Resort Destination on April 14-17, 2013. The expected attendance is 7,000 to 8,000 people and they build trails wherever they go. The Fountain Hills hotels are expected to be filled. At the request of Councilmember Elide, Chair Myers met with Mark McDermott, with the Chamber, to discuss the Preserve being a part of the Town's branding and marketing. AGENDA ITEM#8: REPORT FROM THE PRESERVE ACCESS WORKGROUP Condolences are offered to the family and to the Chaparral City Water Company (CCWC) for the loss of Rob Howes. Mr. Howes was a strong supporter of having Preserve access through the Mayan Canyon water tank access road. Chair Myers and Commissioner Schadle met with Lee Jenkins and three others from the CCWC's administration office. They were generally supportive of providing some access. There is still the question about who owns the water tank access road; CCWC is researching to see if it is theirs. The group was non-committal in spending any funds to improve the road. The HOA people from five years ago who were against providing access have been in touch with CCWC reconfirming their position. A strategy for a positive resolution will have to be determined. Councilmember Elide previously asked Chair Myers to detail the eight possible entrances to the Preserve. Chair Myers will list the possibilities along with the positives and negatives. • 2 McDowell Mountain Preservation Commission • AGENDA ITEM#9: DISCUSSION OF 2012 MEETING SCHEDULE Suggestions from the Commission: • Have six meetings a year • Keep the meetings on the fourth Tuesday of the month • Combine the November and December meeting as done in the past two years • Combine the June and July meetings or cancel the June and July meeting • Meet nine to ten times in 2012 • Need to meet in August to plan for October's McDowell Mountain Month events • Be considerate of the staff's time • Owe to Town to put in best effort A ten meetings schedule will be brought to the January meeting for approval.
