HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003.0405.Compass Pamphlet I I ountain Hills C Vote on Fire and Emergency ¢` Medical Services p :;1: .xi By Rick Melendez, Council Member Citizens often say to me, "Rick, tell it as it is", and, "Rick, cut to the chase." I promise to do just that in this article. On May 20, Fountain Hills residents will vote on how the Town of Fountain Hills should pay for fire and emergency medical - , C T- services. The issue is on the ballot as Proposition 400. J p A YES vote on Proposition 400 will allow the Town of Fountain Hills . to levy a primary property tax exclusively for fire and emergency medical kii ^q services. It will repeal the temporary one percent sales tax increase :1 adopted by the Town on January 16, 2003. A NO vote will prohibit the Town from levying a primary property tax and will leave in place the temporary one percent sales tax increase. It will cause the Town, if it continues to offer fire and emergency medical services, to possibly take money from other programs to cover costs. The anticipated future cost for fire and emergency medical services funding is approximately$2.6 million. Money to pay for these services must come from somewhere. Under Proposition 400, it would be paid by the property tax, allowing for stable, consistent revenues to fund fire and EMS protection for Fountain Hills' residents. As I said before, money must come from somewhere. Under Proposition 400, annual tax on a $300,000 home would be $239.51 or $19.95 per month—less than the cost of most utilities or cable television. This is approximately the same amount paid under the former AFountain Hills Fire District. If a new Fire District were formed, the primary „, property tax authorized under Proposition 400 would be repealed IP automatically. It would be replaced by a secondary property tax levied and collected by the new Fire District.
