HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 1996-47• RESOLUTION NO.1996-47 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR,VICE MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS, SUPPORTING THE EFFORT TO REVERSE THE FEDERAL DRUG ADMINISTRATION'S DECISION REGARDING THE ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT OF ZACHARY MCCONNELL;AND SUPPORTING LEGISLATION BROADENING THE AVAILABILITY OF MEDICAL TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES. WHEREAS,the dreaded disease of cancer,initsmanyvarietiesandforms,has reached epidemic proportions intheUnited States,robbing children oftheirparents,spouses oftheirlife mates,parentsoftheir children,futuresofhopeandpromise;and WHEREAS,theTownofFountainHillshasnotbeensparedthesorrowoflosing beloved family,friends,and neighbors tothe killer disease whose traditional treatment includes subjecting the already suffering patients to chemotherapy drugs and doses of radiation,all of which have adverse and sometimes fatal affects of their own;and WHEREAS,one of Fountain Hills'own,seven year old Zachary McConnell,isinthe midstofabattlewiththisdisease,havingalreadyinhisyounglife,suffered throughsurgeryto remove abrain tumor,countless chemotherapy treatments,and reaction-ridden radiation, precipitating his parents decision to refuse further radiation,but risk certain reoccurrence of the disease without continued treatment;and WHEREAS,antineoplaston,an alternative cancer treatment approved for clinical study in Texas,was successfully administered to Zachary to repress reoccurrence of the cancer,only tobe later denied himbythe Federal Drug Administration because his condition was"notbad enough to warrant additional treatment andhis progress could notbe measured";and WHEREAS,GOP presidential nominee Bob Dolehas co-sponsored abill before Congress toopenup medical treatment alternatives;a Washington D.C.attorney has prepared a lawsuit to befiledthefirstweekinJulyintheninth circuit court in Phoenix on behalf of the McConnells inan attempt toget treatment for Zachary;andthelocal community hasdone what itcanforthe family,conducting fund raisers,increasing awareness and offering moral support tothe McConnells; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR,VICE MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS,ARIZONA,THAT the Town of Fountain Hillshas committed its support inthe effort to reverse the Federal Drug Resolution 1996-47 -Zachary McConnell Pa§e *of 2 (PASS/TAIL Co~ MOTION LCuOrCt^C* second TPrnfl.
