A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE
TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS,ARIZONA,SUPPORTING THE FOUNTAIN
HILLS AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY IN THEIR "SHOW YOUR
COLORS"CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE SUCCESSFUL PASSAGE OF THE
"FLAG PROTECTION AMENDMENT".
WHEREAS:Thomas JeffersonandJames Madison contributed tothewritingofthe
Constitution andtheBillofRights,makingit repeatedly clear intheirwritingthattheoriginalintent
ofthesedocumentswasthattheflagshouldbeprotectedandsuchprotectionwasinnoway
inconsistent with free speech as they defined in the First Amendment;and
WHEREAS:TheAmericanflaghaslongbeenasymboloftheAmericanspirit,embodying
thevalues of freedom for which somanyhave sacrificed so much to preserve;and
WHEREAS:Many Americans believethata1989U.S.Supreme Courtrulingtookaway
the peoples'rightto protect their flagby invalidating flag protection laws in48 states andthe District
of Columbia;and
WHEREAS:Fortyninestateshave petitioned Congress topassaflag protection
constitutional amendment that would give Congress the "power to prohibit the physical desecration
of the flag of the United States",resulting in the "Flag Protection Amendment"(HJR 54)which
passed the House of Representatives on June 12,1997andwill soon be passed tothe Senate;and
WHEREAS:The Citizens Flag Alliance has nationally enlisted theaid of its 125 member
organizations and hundreds oflocal branches including the Fountain Hills American Legion
Auxiliary Post #58to promote the "Show Your Colors America"campaign and encourage every
American toflythe American Flag over their homes and businesses from Memorial Dayuntilthe
Senate vote onthe "Flag Protection Amendment".
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON
COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS,ARIZONA,AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1.That the Town of Fountain Hills,Arizona,supports the efforts of the American
Legion Auxiliary to increase the awareness of Fountain Hills citizens regarding the"flag protection"
legislation which will soon come toavote before the United States Senate.
Section 2.That the Town Clerk is hereby directed to provide a copy ofthis Resolution tothe
appropriate elected officials andlocal representatives of the Fountain Hills American Legion
Auxiliary Post#58.—^^^
