HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 2018-14RESOLUTION NO. 2018-14 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS, MARICOPA COUNTY, ARIZONA, EXPRESSING SERIOUS CONCERN ABOUT THE LEVEL OF FUNDING FOR OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH EMPHASIS ON TEACHER SALARIES; AND CALLING UPON EVERY TOWN- AND CITY - ELECTED BODY IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA TO CONVEY BY RESOLUTION THEIR CONCERNS ABOUT THE STATE OF EDUCATION FUNDING IN ARIZONA. WHEREAS, 99% of the Vision Fountain Hills Workshop participants identified "Mobilize Community to Lobby State Leaders" as a top priority for sustaining FHUSD Schools; and WHEREAS, the Council of the Town of Fountain Hills, in concert with the Fountain Hills School Board, has determined that it is in the best interest of the Town of Fountain Hills to collaborate to improve the educational opportunities for Fountain Hills' students; and WHEREAS, 866 teachers left Arizona classrooms during the first four months of 2017; and WHEREAS, the State of Arizona, according to the Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association, is short 1968 teachers; and WHEREAS, another 3403 teaching positions were filled with people who were not trained as teachers; and WHEREAS, according to recent studies, our K-12 schools currently receive less State aid than in 2008; and WHEREAS, Arizona reduced State aid for education more than any other state; and WHEREAS, K-12 is a key driver of our economy and economic development; and WHEREAS, elementary school teachers in Arizona receive less pay than in any other state in the country and high school teachers' pay ranks #481h; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of teachers, parents, our children, and businesses in the State of Arizona to assure that all students receive the best public education available. PHOENIX 77018-1423670v2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF FOUNTAIN HILLS, ARIZONA, AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That the Council of the Town of Fountain Hills conveys to Governor Ducey, all legislators, and all council members throughout the State our serious concern about the level of funding for our public schools with emphasis on teacher salaries. SECTION 2. That the Council of the Town of Fountain Hills calls upon every town - and city -elected body in the State of Arizona to convey by resolution their concerns about the state of education funding in Arizona.
