MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL JOINT SESSION OF THE
FOUNTAIN HILLS TOWN COUNCIL AND THE
FT.McDOWELL YAVAPAI NATION TRIBAL COUNCIL
July 17,2008
Mayor Schlum called the meeting to order at 11:40 a.m.
Present from Fountain Hills: Jay Schlum, Mayor; Henry Leger, Vice Mayor; and Mike Archambault, Dennis
Contino, Ginny Dickey, Cassie Hansen and Keith McMahan,Councilmembers.
Present from staff of the Town of Fountain Hills: Andrew McGuire, Town Attorney; Rick Davis, Town
Manager; Kate Zanon, Assistant to the Town Manager; Katie Decker, Public Information Officer; Mark Mayer,
Parks and Recreation Director; Samantha Coffman, Community Center Director; Rino Ghetti, Community
Center Events Coordinator; Shaunna Williams, Executive Assistant to the Town Manager, Mayor and Council;
and Susan Trocki,Administrative Assistant.
Present from the Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation Tribal Council: Dr. Clinton M. Pattea, President; Ruben
Balderas, Council Member; and Pamela Mott,Treasurer.
Present from staff of the Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation: Phil Dorchester, General Manager; Alfonso
Rodriguez, Economic Development Director; Dr. Carole Klopatek, Government Relations Director; Diandra
Benally, Legal Counsel; and Rory Majenty, Tourism Director, Alicia Balderaz, Assistant to the President; and
Stella Reed,Assistant to the Vice Chairman.
Agenda Item 1: Mayor Jay Schlum and President Clinton Pattea welcomed meeting attendees. Pamela Mott
Li, offered an invocation. Each attendee gave a self-introduction.
Agenda Item 2: Luncheon was served.
Agenda Item 3: Mayor Jay Schlum and General Manager Phil Dorchester each discussed the importance of
open communication channels. Staffs are to meet to discuss protocols when issues of mutual interest arise.
Agenda Item 4: Parks and Recreation Director Mark Mayer and Community Center Events Coordinator Rino
Ghetti each discussed activities,events and programs offered by the Town of Fountain Hills.
Agenda Item 5: Mayor Schlum discussed the importance of enriching life in both communities through cultural
programs. He also discussed the benefit to both communities in partnering to market tourism. Tourism Director
Rory Majenty also emphasized the need to partner in efforts to expand area tourism.
Agenda Item 6: Kate Zanon discussed current economic development and redevelopment in Fountain Hills and
noted ongoing Town programs and projects. Alfonso Rodriguez discussed the fact that cooperative economic
development efforts benefit both communities.
Agenda Item 7: General Manager Phil Dorchester noted some areas of general concern.
Mayor Schlum adjourned the meeting at 1:32 p.m.
